I am a SoTL scholar, scholarly teacher, and faculty developer. 

After earning my PhD in American literature from the University of Georgia and eventually Full Professor from the University of Wisconsin Colleges, I left full-time faculty work to focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning and faculty development. In this capacity, I’ve worked at Vanderbilt University, the University of Calgary, Rollins College, and now Texas Woman’s University. 

I’ve taught courses on American literature, women’s and gender studies, how learning works in higher education, literary pedagogy, and feminist pedagogy. 

I’ve authored and co-authored numerous articles and book chapters on the results of SoTL projects and on the field of SoTL. See my CV for a full list of my publications. I am currently writing (with Peter Felten & Katarina Mårtensson) The SoTL Guide: (Re)Orienting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, which will be published in 2025.

I also have an extensive editing background, beginning as founding co-editor (with Gary Poole) of Teaching & Learning Inquiry, the journal of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning/ISSOTL (2011-2020).  I am also the editor of SoTL in Action: Illuminating Critical Moments of Practice (2018) and co-editor of An Applied Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (with Shannon M. Sipes and Laura Cruz, 2026), Becoming a SoTL Scholar (with Janice Miller-Young, 2024), Going Public Reconsidered: Engaging With the World Beyond Academe Through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (with Jennifer C. Friberg, 2022) and Exploring Signature Pedagogies: Approaches to Teaching Disciplinary Habits of Mind and Exploring More Signature Pedagogies: Approaches to Teaching Disciplinary Habits of Mind (with Regan A.R. Gurung & Aeron Haynie, 2009 and 2012).

In the middle of the pandemic, I stumbled into a wonderful collaboration that led to a program for mid-career faculty and then our book, Facilitating Mid-Career Faculty Programs: A Guide for Supporting Purposeful Career Development (2024).
