There are three types of ethics review:

 

• Exempt: No ethics approval required (Always contact the CFREB to ensure this status).

 

• Review without full board: Ethics approval required, but fast tracked.

 

• Review with full board: Ethics approval required, review and defended to full ethics committee.

Your study’s type of ethics review is highly dependent on the design of your project and the level of risk posed to you, your participants, and the institution. The rest of this tutorial provides you with a description of each type of review, covers the technical aspects you can expect during the application process, and specifies the necessary steps for you to obtain ethics approval for your SoTL research project.
